The New Science of Epigenetics: A Proven Formula for Balancing One’s Work, Family/Social, Physical and Spiritual Life

Joseph C. Maroon, MD

Professor and Vice Chairman
Department of Neurosurgery
Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Team Physician Pittsburgh Steelers

Background:
Contrary to what many people believe, only 30–35 percent of the effects of aging and the diseases we acquire are genetically based.  This means the other 70 percent are caused by other variables that are actually in our control. These include the foods and supplements we feed our bodies, whether we exercise, how we avoid environmental toxins, and how we control stress.  These are the “secrets” to a longer lifespan, better brain health and avoiding a premature death.

Goals:
In this lecture you will learn more about the new science of Epigenetics, what you can do now to influence our genes for a longer and healthier life. What people fear most is being disabled. Disability due to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases that can leave our body still functioning well but our minds unable to enjoy and participate in our “golden years”. These and other conditions of the mind are what we fear the most because they result in a loss of control.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this Educational Activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the new science of Epigenetics
  2. Identify key points of the latest science on better brain health
  3. Verbalize the best choices and their related benefits to successfully keeping the brain healthy
  4. Identify ways in which brain trauma contributes to brain health.
